Modern was created by Wizards of the Coast in the Spring of 2011 as a response to the increasing popularity of the Legacy format, which although popular proved difficult to access due to the high price of staple cards. *It’s worth noting, though, that both men and women can risk straining or detaching certain soft connective tissues (such as those holding retinae or breasts in place) when they subject their bodies to truly rapid acceleration-so bungee jumpers be wary.Modern is the newest constructed format. With any luck, it’ll turn out that the text-happy youngsters of today will still be able to speak in full sentences tomorrow. Time’s also told us that, despite initial fears of the telephone’s possible downsides, chatting on the phone will not cause impropriety, possession, or electrocution in women. In 1909, 22-year-old Alice Ramsey managed to drive cross-country in a respectable 59 days and-having kept herself, her car, and her three female friends intact along the way-helped prove that women could be trusted behind the wheel. Nevertheless, women stuck up for their right to mobility. As automobiles gained traction in the early 1900s, they were seen by many as noisy, erratic “devil wagons” that women-thought to be prone to fainting, physical weakness, and out-of-the-blue bouts of hysteria-wouldn’t be able to control by themselves and shouldn’t be allowed to drive. This society-wide panic often (unfairly) dotes on the threats an innovation might pose to women and children, and it didn’t end when we got over our locomotive fears. They may have changed our relationships to other people, but they didn’t really change our relationships to time and space.” Critics of early steam-spewing locomotives, for example, thought “that women’s bodies were not designed to go at 50 miles an hour,” and worried that “ uteruses would fly out of bodies as they were accelerated to that speed”-which, for the record, they did and will not.* Others suspected that any human body might simply melt at high speeds.īell attributes this kind of reaction in part to the “moral panic” that a society experiences when particularly revelatory technological advances show up-specifically, ones which interfere with or alter our relationships with time, space, and each other: A century and a half ago, though, our travel worries involved a lot less AI and much more spontaneous combustion and/or mutilation-imagined dangers that were just as scary, and (seemingly) just as real.Ĭultural anthropologist Genevieve Bell explained to the Wall Street Journal TECH site that extreme, fearful reactions to new technology are age old, and have even picked up speed alongside our rate of innovation. Today, some of our biggest concerns about the dangers of transportation have to do with failing or clashing technologies-we’re afraid onboard GPS and other high-tech features will get mixed up, say, or even get hacked. Spiderman 3 full movie kiss4/29/2023 ![]() Unsurprisingly, Spider-Man: No Way Home is also technically superb, with exhilarating effects sequences, expert cinematography, and a breathless music score. There's plenty of time for some of the funniest bits of dialogue in any of the Marvel movies so far, as well as moments of undeniable warmth between characters who've become so soothingly familiar. Yet the filmmakers don't let things get preachy or self-righteous. Peter makes a most unusual decision in the story, steering away from what might be the "normal" choice in a comic book story and choosing something more unconventional, perhaps even uncinematic, because it's the right thing to do. At its core, the movie is about families (including the "found families" we make along the way), doing the right thing, and helping out. ![]() There's so much in Spider-Man: No Way Home to try not to spoil, but, given that the three Tom Holland Spidey movies all play on the word "home," even the title holds some clues. This Spider-Man sequel has all the necessary ingredients for a top-notch superhero movie, including hilarity and heart, action and anxiousness, and some happy surprises. Language includes uses of "s-t" and "ass," and a character says "what the ffff." Characters learn from their mistakes and demonstrate perseverance, and messages revolve around the importance of second chances, helping those in need, the lasting impact of doing good deeds, and, of course, the connection between power and responsibility. There's also brief sex-related dialogue, kissing, and nongraphic partial nudity. Characters die (one death is particularly sad), and lives are threatened. There's punching, choking, kicking, explosions, bloody cuts and scrapes, and brief guns and shooting. ![]() Violence includes a lot of comic book-style fighting and peril, with characters getting slammed and bashed around, falling from high places, etc. It's fun, funny, exciting, suspenseful, surprising, and very moving and is sure to please Spidey fans. Parents need to know that Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland and the 27th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The whisperer in darknes4/28/2023 ![]() It is the mental violence of the old, tranquil, explainable being replaced by the inimical, uncaring, and alien that is the horror, not the particular image which Lovecraft uses to finish his process of painting encroaching mental chaos. I suspect that Lovecraft wanted the central horror of some of his best stories to not be contained in the final revelation as much as the depiction of a rationale, learned person (as his scholar heroes almost always are) being forced to confront a new, horrible paradigm. The particular revelation at the end of this story - the fake hands and face used by the Outer One imposter of Akeley - may be unexpected, but the revelation that Akeley has been silenced (specifically he’s a disembodied brain ready to be taken in a traveling cylinder to Yuggoth) by the Outer Ones is not. ![]() It occurred to me that this tale shows the incorrectness of a common criticism of Lovecraft: that the horrible, final revelations of his narrators are hardly shocking or unexpected. Lovecraft’s use of documents is on hand here as he builds the suspense by the device of Wilmarth and Akeley, increasingly threatened by the Outer Ones around his Vermont home, communicating by letter. There are entities from beyond the our space and our time. There must have been much to talk about in the faculty lounge though Lovecraft makes no reference to the earlier tale.) (Though no specific mention is made of it, the climax of this story and Lovecraft’s “ The Dunwich Horror” - also featuring Miskatonic U professors - both take place in early September 1928. Other classic Cthulhu Mythos elements are a narrator, here a folklorist from Miskatonic University, narrating the horror in retrospect though, interestingly, here he is not trying to rationalize away his horrible discoveries even though he lacks any objective proof for them. I recognized some that were made up by other authors of the Lovecraft circle, and I’m sure I missed others that fit in that category. There is a veritable roll-call of Cthulhu deities. Arthur Machen gets a specific mention has does Charles Fort (thereby answering my question about Fort’s influence on Lovecraft). I have no idea if they are all real writers but I did recognize the names of Frazer and Murray (of the now discredited Witch-Cults of Europe). His interest in folklore, is mentioned in a role call of modern folklorist. Lovecraft’s historical erudition is on hand here in brief asides about New England colonial history. Oddly enough, he mentions the Outer Ones as flying through the ether with their wings when, of course, Lovecraft must have been aware that ether was disproved in the famous Michaelson-Morley experiment which laid the groundwork for Einstein’s work. Lovecraft talks about how Einstein’s contention that faster than light travel is impossible is wrong. (Narrator Wilmarth and Akeley echo what must have been Lovecraft’s disdain for real estate developers when they talk about how the rural hills of Vermont must not be inhabited.) A particularly brilliant move is equating the Outer Ones’ home of Yuggoth (a favorite piece of fabulous geography in Lovecraft’s oeuvre) with Pluto which was discovered in 1930, the very year this story was written. They could conquor the Earth if they wanted but aren’t about to bother unless we give them trouble. He gives us the Outer Ones, an alien race conducting secret mining operations in the Vermont hills (sort of a predecessor to John Keel’s Mothman), and he describes their biology as well as motives. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu stories frequently boosted their verisimilitude with bits of science and history and literature, but Lovecraft is particularly skilled at that here. It’s not only a horror story, but it also has the feeling of a creepy sf story. Upon the second reading, I’m inclined to agree. Joshi at one point said this was one of Lovecraft’s greatest stories.
